SCOTUS Appointments by Candidiate

CBS Local’s Presidential Forum asked Governor Romney and President Obama: "What criteria would you use to appoint Supreme Court justices? Should Supreme Court justices be strict constitutionalists?:

Romney answered, “my judicial nominees will exhibit a genuine appreciation for the text, structure, and history of our Constitution, will interpret the Constitution and the laws as they are written, and will possess a demonstrated record of adherence to these core principles”

Obama said that he looks for a nominee “who understands that justice is not just about abstract legal theories or footnotes in a casebook – it’s also about how our laws affect the daily realities of people's lives – whether they can make a living and care for their families, whether they feel safe in their homes and welcome in their own nation.”

The Constitution is the foundation and framework for our nation’s efforts to address its history and meet new challenges in order to assure liberty and freedom for all. Whoever is elected president in November, we hope they nominate justices who understand that the Constitution is a living document.
