The government must exert the principles of fairness and equality to all and cannot discriminate against people on the basis of their sexual orientation. The military’s infamous “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy prevented gay and lesbian servicemembers from serving openly – under the misguided notion that they would distract from and threaten the mission, morale and unit cohesion – and unfairly prosecuted them out of the military.
